The one simple habit that changed my entire business and life

tweet share share pin email

Is it just me or do we as designers like variety like it really is the elixir of life?

I try so many things it’s not funny.

  • I hate eating the same meal twice — I always have to cook something different. (It drives my partner nuts.)
  • I must have at least 50 unfinished books I’m still reading.
  • 17 unfinished DIY projects around the house.
  • 20+ unfinished courses.
  • Boxes of paints and blank canvases with not a painting in sight.
  • Half knitted scarves.
  • And the list goes on…

So it goes without saying that my daily routine is not a routine at all.

I mean, I know I wrote 97 Habits of Insanely Profitable Designers for you a while back, but to be honest, I like to change things up all the time and rarely stick to the same routine every single day.

Sidenote: Once you finish, read how 4 freelancers built recurring revenue models that changed their business. You'll love it.

Except for just one habit…

No matter what, I always do this one.

  • I might skip the hard core workout at the gym.
  • The visualisation.
  • I may even skip a shower if I’m working from home. (Hey, don’t judge me, I know you do it too!)

But this one thing has literally changed my life.

I feel happier.

I sleep better.

You'll also enjoy this episode of our new podcast...

And I am kicking some seriously amazing goals.

It’s simple. Quick. Free.

And life-changing.

  • Is it a gratitude journal? No.
  • Is it EFT tapping? No.
  • Is it meditation? No.

Although all those things are good, I rarely do ALL of them EVERY single day. (I like spicing it up, remember?)

But this one I do.

And I totally believe that you should too.

It’s simply setting your intention for the day with what would make it great, and then at night writing three things that made today amazing.

Just like this…

What would make today great?

  1. …………………………………………………..
  2. …………………………………………………..
  3. …………………………………………………..

Then just before you go to bed…

3 Amazing things that happened today…

  1. …………………………………………………..
  2. …………………………………………………..
  3. …………………………………………………..

That’s it.

It’s so easy it’s scary, but don’t be fooled by its simplicity.

When I first started doing it I couldn’t believe how often things were coming true. It just couldn’t be this darn easy, right? I mean I’m all for law of attraction and all that but this was something else.

Just to test it out I started to write crazy insane unrealistic things like:

  • 11 inbound website leads (when we normally get about 4-6)
  • $20k in Xmas promo sales (when last year I did $9k)
  • 20 Facebook sales (off a product I created in a day)
  • 3 x SEO leads (when we’d get that in a month)

All in one day.

And guess what? They pretty much all came true. Almost everything I write comes true.

No joke.

The promotion I run at Christmas made me $9k in 2013. I set a goal for $20k for 2014 thinking double was grossly ambitious – and I actually made almost $34k off that one promotion!

Because I take time to reflect on what went well at night time, I go to bed feeling like Wonder Woman. And because I’m internally getting around in full body spandex flaunting my new Wonder Woman powers, I sleep like a baby and wake up as happy!

Sidenote: I don’t always stop at three BTW, sometimes my list has grown to over 20 things that happened in one day that were amazing. Just keep writing until your mind runs blank.

So I encourage you to try it — if nothing else, just try this every morning and night for a week and let me know how it impacts your business and life.

What daily rituals do you swear by? I’d love to hear in the comments!

  1. Great post! It’s all in the mind of the believer. It does help keep you focused and positive. This is definitely something I want to be more diligent with in my routines. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    • Thanks Melissa, you’re spot on! It’s amazing how just the simple act of writing it down each morning can have such a big impact on ALL the choices you make throughout the day. Instead of always working on being ‘busy’, you suddenly find yourself only working on high value tasks that take you closer towards your goals — without even thinking twice about it.

  2. So you just wrote it down and it magically came through? Wow! That’s amazing! This article is so stupid, I’m ashamed to subscribe to your list. Unsubscribing now…

    • Paul Trivilino says:

I think she forgot to add “Write an awesome blog post” on her What Would Make Today Great list last night. 😉

      • Whoa, that’s a bit harsh Paul, don’t knock it ’til you try it mate — it really does work! 😉

        • Sean and Paul, that really is harsh! It’s easy to see Bianca’s point about setting goals, and writing them down will help to focus you and encourage you to actively go after them. But if the advice doesn’t work for you, no need to be nasty, you can always just ignore the article!

Great job Bianca, I have been reading your posts for a while and enjoy them! I am going to have to try this as I have some big business goals that I keep on ignoring because of the amount of hard work that is going to be involved! So this is the kind of motivation I need to work on 🙂

      • Hey guys, we’re all for open discussion. If you have different or better ideas on how to improve your business, please do share them with us. But blatant attacks without constructive criticism is something we just don’t do here.

    • I can see how that can be misconstrued Sean, but no, it didn’t just magically appear — I guess I should have clarified. Of course I had to do a ton of work but because I set my intentions each morning, I was laser focussed on kicking those goals without even thinking about it. It’s hard to explain the ‘how’ but it works, and sometimes it feels like magic when it does. 🙂

  3. Thoroughly enjoyed and am inspired by the article – these kinds of tips have changed my life in terms of being able to double my business in the past year, just by filling out a workbook full of similar exercises and prompts last January. This stuff actually works by helping to shift the focus to the right things… makes you introspect on what it is you really want to achieve, and what ‘success’ really looks and feels like to you. Once you know the “details” of the success you’re going after, it gets SO MUCH easier and quicker to experience.

“Take care of your Thoughts because they become Words.

Take care of your Words because they will become Actions.

Take care of your Actions because they will become Habits.

Take care of your Habits because they will form your Character.

Take care of your Character because it will form your Destiny,

and your Destiny will be your Life.”

    • Thank you so much for sharing this Bhakti, I’m a big believer in this too but it’s great to read it again as a reminder. And congrats on doubling your business in just one year! Well done! I know firsthand what’s required to do that so hats off to you. No doubt 50% mindset and 50% strategy worked wonders for you too! 🙂

    • Awesome! I’ve heard the first two lines, but never the last 4. Thanks for sharing!

  4. I seem to struggle with the positive thinking and the “laser focus” that you mentioned, so this article was really helpful. I have definitely found that those days when I write down attainable goals I am super focused on getting them done and feel so much more accomplished! Thanks Bianca!

  5. I can see how this article may leave some readers feeling like it was a waste of time to read it. BUT if you understand the power of writing down your goals then you’ll understand what’s being said here. It’s about focus and getting your mind in the right place before you go out and tackle the day. Some folks won’t get it, but some folks will. Bianca is simply sharing something that works for her and encouraging the rest of us to try it. So for that, thank you, Bianca!

  6. Bianca! maybe we are not-identical twins separated at birth haha ,

I haven´t done this, but i will definitely start doing.
I have enjoy the benefit of setting goals and working on their completion. It´s excellent.

    Thank you!

  7. Totally digging the idea of setting an intention for the day! It feels to me like writing a goal or wish for the day, so I can absolutely see how that would work. Going to add that to my days next week. 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration!
