I can tell you, it would feel pretty great.  I know because I’ve been there (I still am!) and it always feels better to act with intention, rather than hope for the best.

1. Start where you are

One of the things I’ve learned from my own experience as a business owner and as a coach for countless others is we always want to be somewhere vastly different from where we are (what’s with that!?).  We decide we want to go from working with crappy clients who undervalue and underpay us, to having a business that has meaning, is profitable, and fulfills us every minute of our lives.  And we want it to happen NOW.

The solution:  Dream big, then create very small steps towards those dreams.  Take one small step at a time and hold yourself accountable (or better still, recruit others to do it too) to keep moving forward. Before you know it, you will have progressed more than you ever thought imaginable.

2. Get the fundamentals in place

Getting from where you are to where you want to be is way harder (if not impossible) without certain fundamentals in place.

3. Test your ideas

Have you ever had a great idea, spent months putting it together, only to hear crickets when you put it out into the world? I have, and it sucks!  Here’s what I learned. Perfectionism and entrepreneurship don’t play well together.

The solution: Put your idea out into the world at a more formative stage and see what response it gets. If clients aren’t beating down your door, try figure out what aspect isn’t resonating. Is it the positioning, the price, the format? Put it out there, ask for feedback, tweak, and put it out there again.

4. Re-calibrate your business

Businesses are living things, they change all the time, and they need to be recalibrated regularly to keep growing.  Just last week, I worked with two former clients to review where their business was and where they wanted to take it next. Both had plenty of clients, were making good money, and all that great stuff, but were looking ahead. Music to my ears! Both left our session feeling reinvigorated and refocused and knowing exactly what they needed to do next.

The solution: A simple review (with or without a business coach) can do wonders for your focus, energy, and results. Take time each quarter to look at what’s up with your business. I promise you won’t regret it!
