This episode's question came in via email.
Nico works as a designer for a company right now, and he wants to start freelancing on the side and build a business.
He said, “I was thinking of creating a portfolio, including the projects I've completed in my current company, but in a fictitious way (use different names, organizations, etc.) Also, state that this is a fictional project but that the process and outputs are the same. Do you think this will work to close deals?
If you were a company that would be reviewing my portfolio, would you think that I'm experienced or just someone trying to fool you?”
Note: we are not attorneys, and we will not even touch the question of if it’s something legal or not. We are not providing legal advice in any way. This type of advice should be provided by a certified professional, and we are not.

Today's question comes from our FREE Mastermind Group on Facebook.
Anne asks, "I've been working with a client for several years, and it's been an excellent relationship. However, the spouse is now interfering with the design of printed marketing materials. Now she has decided to start creating her own designs, in spite of the visual appearance I'm trying to build across all marketing materials. The clients so far does not appear to be willing to put a stop to it. Could anyone who has successfully salvaged a similar situation? Give me some advice on how to eject the spouse from the design work?"
So, you know, the real question is - if someone's interfering with this process that you've already set up with your client, how do you politely fix the situation? Let's dive into it!

Today we’re joined by Chad who’s working on building his agency in Utah, USA. Chad works with clients all over the world. They hire him because they like and trust him.
But what’s a freelancer to do when it’s time to pass the client trust along to your team?
That’s the question we answer together on today’s episode: how can I get my clients to trust my team.
Building trust in your team can help take some work off your shoulders and free you up to continue growing your business. But transferring trust can be fragile and difficult at times.

Have you ever thought: “if I can just get the attention of more people, I could close more clients and grow my business”
That’s where we find today’s guest, Jay. He’s a web developer and SEO expert in Kentucky USA. And Jay’s only been freelancing for a few months. He’s off to a great start having already closed a half-dozen monthly recurring clients.
Jay’s biggest question is how to get more volume. Or more awareness. So, of course, as marketing geeks Clay and I jump in with some of our best advice.
And we wrap up the episode with advice that, frankly, I’m still not sure was good.
You’ll want to listen all the way to the end for that one.

The question…? When selling your services which is better: focusing on deliverables or results?

Multiple times a week, we have freelancers ask about pricing.
So, in response, I’d like to share a few of my thoughts on what your freelance pricing says about you.
This audio for this episode was actually pulled from our YouTube channel which we relaunched recently with some really great new videos.

Have you ever wondered if you’re doing too much in your business? For those of us who are multi-talented, it can be hard to know when to stop doing everything in our business.
That’s just one question we tackle with today’s guest, Grant. As he explains it, one of his biggest problems is he has the ability to do all kinds of things—from writing, to design, to founding businesses.
But there must be a point at which doing everything yourself is not the best option. So how do you identify that moment and what should you do when your ability to do everything becomes your own biggest problem?
Stay tuned after this quick message to find out.

On today’s show: maybe you’ve heard expert advice saying you should hire a VA—a virtual assistant. You might have even heard that advice from us, on this show.
But what exactly should you hire a VA for? And is hiring a VA really worth the money?
Those are two questions we explore on our coaching call with Ben Marcoux who lives in Rhode Island, USA.
Ben found himself wondering why in the world he would want to hire a VA in the first place. Then, after taking the leap, he wishes he had done it years ago.
Plus, Clay and I share our best advice for making the most of your virtual assistant and we talk about scaling your business vs growing it.

On today’s show: Have you ever noticed just how liberating it can be to tell your clients “no”?
In the early years of your freelance career, you feel almost obligated to say “yes” to any request your clients make. After all, they’re the ones paying your bills.
But every “yes” to a client request means a “no” to something else in your business. If you’re not careful, your clients end up deciding the direction of your company this way.
This is where we find today’s guest Erica.
She’s been told she needs to follow a path offering sophisticated internet marketing, when in reality she just loves working on meaningful brands and building websites.
So how can Erica say “no” when clients keep asking for more?

On today’s show: how can you stop using agency work as a crutch & build your own rolodex of high quality clients?
It’s something we chat about with our first ever guest duo, Shelby & Kristina. They’re two comedic video marketers doing really fun work out of Hollywood, California.
In the wake of the pandemic, Shelby and Kristina started their video business and found early success with agencies. And while working with agencies definitely has its advantages, there are lots of downsides too.
So today’s show focuses on breaking free from agency-dependent work and finding your own audience, offering, and client base.
It’s one of the best conversations we’ve ever had on the show and you won’t want to miss it. Stay tuned.
Oh, and really quick before we dive in, I have to tell you quickly about this new tool we discovered called Hectic. It’s an all-in-one business suite built just for freelancers. We’ve partnered up with them and left a link in the show description, and you should really click through to see what I’m talking about.
