[Q&A] Should Your Client Choose How to Pay?

15 min

May 02, 2023

Today's question comes from our Facebook Mastermind Group (it's completely free. Join +11,000 freelancers and agency builders helping each other).

Jay opened a discussion there that made us come up with the following question:

When a client asks you, "Can I pay you with a cheque?" or "Can I pay you with PayPal?" - How much do you let the client determine how they're going to pay? And how much do you dictate how you get paid in your business?

To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK, and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.

[Q&A] Am I Offering Too Many Services?

16 min

Apr 18, 2023

In today's SHORT, Brittany says, "I'm a freelance designer and a marketer located in New York. My question is, how do you keep clients engaged once they've signed on? I have a few clients that have signed up for monthly marketing support, etc, but the problem is, I can't get anything out of them. I need content and updates. I've tried emails, I've tried setting up monthly check in meetings, but nothing seems to really work. And because of this, I feel I'm failing them. They're paying their bills. But at the end of the day, I don't feel good about it, because my results aren't what they could be. I would love any advice."

We've chatted about this in a full length episode previously, but it's been a while. We've probably learned something since then. So, we'll do our best to answer Brittany's question.

Overwhelmed w/ Marketing? Start Here.

61 min

Apr 13, 2023

Have you ever looked at all the marketing options out there and felt so overwhelmed you just don’t do any marketing at all?

You’re not alone. That’s exactly where we find our guest, Matt—calling in today from the UK.

Matt’s growing his new business and has taken courses, listened to podcasts, and read blogs all about lead generation.

But there are so many marketing ideas out there, Matt’s feeling a bit overwhelmed. Some quote-unquote experts say you have to “be everywhere” with your marketing.

If that feels a little too overwhelming, try using the methods we explain today. One involves a helpful venn diagram and the other a very fitting analogy of a bike and a car.

[Q&A] Passive Income for Freelancers: Myth or Reality?

12 min

Apr 11, 2023

In today's short, we’ll cover 4 powerful ways to build passive income into your freelance business.

Passive income is the holy grail of any business. And the reason why is pretty obvious. Who doesn’t want to make money on autopilot instead of clocking in and out daily to earn a paycheck?

So in today’s episode, we’ll share 4 of the most successful ways we’ve seen real freelancers grow their passive income.

The audio for this episode was actually pulled from our YouTube channel, which we’ve been working really hard on recently. We partner with freelancing expert—like Josh who you’ll hear today—to release new videos every week.

This episode is not an ad—even though you’ll hear me recommend Collective throughout the show. And we do have an affiliate code.

Use the code "Millo" to get 50% off during your first month.

[Q&A] Will ChatGPT Kill Freelancing?

20 min

Mar 14, 2023

Today's question comes from Laura Bean. Laura submitted a question at freelance to founder.com/ask. And I love this question because it's been on my mind lately. Clay and I talked before we hit record about this AI and artificial intelligence and how it impacts our freelancer jobs.

She said, "The recent launch of chat GPT and other AI advances have led me to question how I future-proof my business." So just for context, she's a copywriter. And I think I think writers are mainly concerned right now, but I digress. She says, "How do I future-proof my business in a world where I am in a profession that AI could completely take over? I don't think it's there yet. But it means significant changes to my industry. I'm sure I'm not the only copywriter with concerns. However, despite concerns, I also want to learn how to embrace this technology. Have you any thoughts about how you future proof of service-based business potentially competing with AI, or how we as copywriters integrate AI into our services?"

Your Pitch: from "yawn" to "YES!"

54 min

Mar 09, 2023

On today’s episode: how do people react when you give them your elevator pitch—you know, that 30-second pitch about what you do as a freelancer or agency? Is it with a “yawn” or a “YES”?

In today’s episode, we coach Miljan through some improvements he can make to perfect his pitch.

Sometimes, we’re just too close to our own work to realize that our jargon-heavy pitch explains too much about the “how” and not enough about the “why”—or the result our clients need.

This episode is fire. One of my personal favorites to date.

Are You Stealing From Future You?

54 min

Mar 02, 2023

On today’s show: are you stealing from future you?

See, there are two ways to build a freelance business: focusing on revenue right now or on future revenue.

And while it’s hard to see past the “right now” revenue, it can be critical when it comes to growing your business.

That’s where we find our guest Angela. Some weeks she’s so busy working on client deliverables she forgets to work on her actual business.

It’s the classic tale of quitting your job to create another job for yourself.

So Clay and I coach her through a few things, including managing her time more efficiently and staying accountable to the schedule and tasks she sets for herself.

[Q&A] How to Future-Proof Your Business in a World of AI

20 min

Feb 21, 2023

You're listening to our brand-new Freelance to Founder SHORTS, 5-10 minute episodes answering one (or two) questions from listeners like you.

To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK, and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.

Clarity Matters

55 min

Feb 16, 2023

On today’s show: Can you clearly explain your value to potential clients in 10 seconds or less?

It’s not easy to do. And while today’s guest Joshua was technically able to do it, the more we spoke with him, the more we weren’t sure exactly what he offered his clients.

And this can be a significant problem. Particularly if, like Joshua, you’re trying to release a new product to a new audience in a new city. In this conversation, we advise Joshua on clarity, selling, and building a brand within his community.

Let's dive in!

[Q&A] From Zero to One Employee

18 min

Feb 07, 2023

You're listening to our brand-new Freelance to Founder SHORTS, 5-10 minute episodes answering one (or two) questions from listeners like you.

To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK, and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.

Today's question comes from Dan Gilbert.

How can I take that jump from zero employees to one employee?

He said, "the last five years, I've made the same amount of revenue per year, and I've decided I want to change that. Between production work, selling, marketing, and accounting. I have a lot going on, but I don't make enough to hire someone yet." And so then he asks the question, "How can I take the jump from zero employees to one? Should I hire contractors instead? So I can focus more on selling and less on doing production work?

We'll have some awesome things to share with Dan here!
