Don’t create another job for yourself: Freelancing means freedom!

There’s a reason I love freelancing and entrepreneurship.

It’s not the money (although that’s nice).

It’s not the fame. (Wait, who is this guy?)

It not that I am my own boss. (Sometimes that’s more work than you’d think.)

It’s the freedom.

Months when I want to make more money, I can work harder and spend more time on my businesses. But months when I want to spend more time with my wife and 2-year-old son, I can do that too.

It’s all up to me.

But there’s a trend I’ve been seeing among online entrepreneurs and freelancers that really scares me.

Here it is: they’re creating a job for themselves.

Another job?

See, most people get into entrepreneurship or freelancing because they like the idea of choosing when they work, how they work, or who they work with.

They don’t want to be told how or when to do their job.

And, for heaven’s sake, can they just get a little time off!?

But once your freelance business starts growing and getting bigger (don’t worry, I’ve fallen for it too) you start to feel more obligated to it.

If you skip a day from blogging or don’t call your client back immediately on a Wednesday night, you feel like the whole world is going to explode.

Well, I have news for you:

The world won’t explode.

At least, not until the end of this year, according to the Mayans.

So DON’T create another job for yourself!

Here’s what I mean

I had learned that lesson before, but this year, as I’ve tried to really step up the quality of content and community here at Millo (and I think we’ve done a pretty good job), I’ve tried to stick to a posting schedule (every M, W, and F if you didn’t notice).

Then, life got crazy.

You don’t care about all the crazy stuff that has happened to me, so I’ll spare you the story, but suffice it to say, life got crazy this summer.

I had a lot going on.

And it quickly got impossible to post on the blog, moderate comments and manage my other small internet businesses as much as I had been.

And guess what, some of you didn’t even notice.


Because life gets crazy for you too sometimes.

I went a whole week (gasp) without blogging here at Millo.

Can you believe it? A whole WEEK?!

And guess what…

nothing blew up.

In fact, the image below shows traffic for the last 30 days, 7 of which I didn’t blog at all.

Can you tell which week I took off?

I can’t.

So chill out

Your site visitors are people.

Your blog readers are people.

And (believe it or not) your clients are people too.

And people are all the same.

We all need a day off now and again.

It’s ok.

Don’t forget one of the reasons you started freelancing or running a business in the first place was for the freedom.

If you’re not able to take a day (or a week) off from your own business, then all you’ve done is create a job for yourself.

So take it from me, taking time off is ok. In fact, it’s awesome.

  2. I had a similar realization when I recently went on vacation with very limited internet access. I couldn’t afford to spend much time online so I didn’t. I did some prep work to post while I was gone, and snuck in a little bit of social media when I found internet access, but really, the world didn’t end and my business didn’t fall apart.

    Also, while I was visiting family for the past two weeks (I’ve had unlimited access to internet), I received not one but 4 potential job offers! Who knew? Perhaps I should go on vacation more often!!!

    Also, I realized that to take 4 weeks of vacation per year rather than 2, all I need to do is raise my hourly rate $1. That’s it! (So I did.)
