Getting Clients to Treat You Like an Agency

52 min

Nov 24, 2022

On today’s show, I’m joined by a good friend of mine, Chelsea Baldwin as a special guest coach. Together, we coach Australian freelancer-turned-agency-builder Caroline.

She has built up a nice freelance business and has begun to work with subcontractors to begin scaling her business.

But she’s realizing it’s harder to transition from solo freelancer to full-on agency than she initially expected. Chelsea and I coach her on two critical tasks:

How to get her clients to start treating her like an agency—instead of a freelancer. And how to get the word out about her new agency and start bringing in fresh clients even if she doesn’t feel quite ready.

We wrap up the episode with some really strong advice from Chelsea on getting new clients with Linkedin. Join us on this jam-packed episode.

This episode aired originally on October 22, 2020.

[Q&A] Is Freelancing Really Worth It?

16 min

Nov 15, 2022

You're listening to our brand-new Freelance to Founder SHORTS, 5-10 minute episodes answering one (or two) questions from listeners like you.

To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.

today's question comes from Travis Hostetter. He says, "I'm only a month into freelancing. I've just made $95 with another $500 on the way. The flexibility I have with my time is amazing. But losing a strong W-2 income has been hard. I'm in a position financially where I can be patient, but there are also operating opportunities to earn significant income as an employee. What are some of the biggest pros or positives of being a 1099 freelancer. How can being a 1099 outweigh the W-2 when the taxes are so high?"

He's basically struggling to decide if really this freelancing thing is worth it when there's so many higher-paying opportunities out there.

Today I'm joined by my friend, Adam Wright, and we're ready to answer.

[Q&A] Responding to an Impatient Client

14 min

Nov 08, 2022

You're listening to our brand-new Freelance to Founder SHORTS, 5-10 minute episodes answering one (or two) questions from listeners like you.

To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.

Today's question comes from Prithvi in the Millo Mastermind Group.

It's just a free Facebook group of 11,000 freelancers hanging out, asking questions, learning from one another. It's a lot of fun.

Prithvi's question is, "How do I explain to my client that it's going to take time to increase the number of website visitors and he isn't going to get 100 website visitors overnight?"

So it's obvious that Prithvi does maybe some SEO work, some online traffic, or online marketing. I think the real question is like, "how do I manage expectations? I have a client who wants results like yesterday, but I know that real valuable results are going to take some time."

Adam and I will do our best to answer!

On today’s episode: how can you actually get the attention of the perfect audience for your business?

It’s a question we got from Roopika, who called in from India. She’s got a really unique business—you’ll hear more about that real soon—and she’s wondering how she can get in front of the decision-makers to grow her client base.

So Clay and I give her our best advice for building attention both online and offline and by the end of the show, Roopika’s got a plan. We hope it helps you too.

On today’s show: do you ever wonder how to generate some of the best leads possible?

For most freelancers and agencies, filling your pipeline with quality leads is not only critical to your business’s health, but also one of the toughest problems to solve.

That’s how our guest Morgan feels right now. Morgan’s a side-hustler who wants to take her freelancing full-time.

But until she has a steady stream of client leads, it just can’t happen.

So Clay and I break down everything we know about lead generation—from local leads, to online leads and everything in between.

It’s a can’t-miss episode.

On today’s show: did you know there’s a difference between how freelancers handle money and how founders do? If you want to build a more predictable business, the honest truth is you’ll have to start thinking about money very differently.

In this episode, Clay and I go into exactly how WE think about and manage money in our own businesses and give you some ways to make more, save more, and level up when it comes to your own business finances.

Today's SHORT question comes from Christine Williams.

She says, "What type of work did you choose to put in your portfolio when you were starting out? I don't have much because I no longer have access to things I've done at previous jobs. Did you do mockups for fake businesses or services?" I think this is a great question. Let's get Christine an answer!

[Q&A] Can I Really Raise My Rates?

19 min

Sep 20, 2022

You're listening to our brand-new Freelance to Founder SHORTS, 5-10 minute episodes answering one (or two) questions from listeners like you.

To submit your question, visit FreelanceToFounder.com/ASK and we'll feature you on an upcoming episode.

Today's question comes from Annie Milner, who was on the show previously. It was great to hear back from her again.

She says, "I have a question. I haven't raised my rates in two to three years, partly due to COVID. I currently charge $75 per hour.

Do you think that's it's too drastic to raise to $85 per hour? Important to note that I quote on a per project basis, so it's unlikely most clients will even notice.

I'm about to write a new contract with a retainer client, though, who actually nudged me about raising my rates. So really, the question is, you know, can I raise my rates? Should I raise my rates?"

Imposter Syndrome

Sep 15, 2022

On today’s episode, I’m not here. I mean, I’m reading this right now, but when this conversation took place, I was dealing with some family stuff.

In my absence, Clay is joined by our very good friend Adam Wright—a very talented freelancer who works on both of our teams.

Clay and Adam get into one of the toughest topics all of us face at one time or another. That’s Imposter syndrome. And I have to say, it’s a great conversation. We hope you enjoy it.

How Much Should You Spend on Marketing?

52 min

Sep 08, 2022

On today’s show, our guest skipped out, so Clay and I hit record to discuss something we see a lot of business builders get wrong: marketing budgets.

You know that phrase, “you’ve got to spend money to make money”?

Well, you might have thought: "that’s not necessarily true. I get referrals for free."

But you DO have to spend money in order to predictably SCALE your business. So how can you know exactly how much to spend on marketing efforts next year?

Today, we’ll walk you through a simple formula for identifying just how much you should pay for marketing without taking on too much risk.

This episode originally aired on December 2, 2021.
